UN-R 144 vs. Regulation (EU) 2015/758, 2017/78 and 2017/79
eCall is an automatic emergency call system for motor vehicles postulated by the European Union. We were designated as a technical service for eCall in August 2017 by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and were the first laboratory in Europe to offer and carry out eCall testing and certification. Likewise, we were designated by the KBA as the first technical service for the regulation UN-R 144.
Our eCall experts now created an assessment paper to compare the UNECE regulation UN-R 144 with the EU eCall regulations to address the following questions:
- What aspects are taken into account by the UNECE regulation UN-R 144 but not by the Regulation (EU) 2015/758, Regulation (EU) 2017/78 and Regulation (EU) 2017/79 and vice versa?
- What aspects are taken into account by both but with different test specifications/acceptance criteria?
The 15 page long paper provides an overview of the technical differences in both regulations e.g. the different MSD fields that are verified during the sled and vehicle crash tests. Furthermore, for multiple requirements, no test procedures are defined in UN-R 144. For those parts we suggest potential test procedures (e.g. based on ERA-GLONASS test procedures) to verify those UN-R 144 requirements. The assessment paper also contains a summary that highlights the overlap and gaps of both regulations.
