Testing of WLAN devices
Many technical products today are equipped with Wireless-LAN (WLAN) interfaces. The use of these technologies results in various testing scenarios which are required for the certification of a device and, consequently, for the market launch. In this context, differentiation can be made between regulatory tests that are mandatory for a certification and test scenarios on the basis of the specifications of private certification regimes.
As base bands for the use of a WLAN device, globally communicated frequency bands in the range of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are available. When implementing a WLAN module, the manufacturer decides in which frequency bands the module should spark: 2.4 and / or 5 GHz.
This decision has implications for the regulatory testing required for certification in the target market. Many countries and certification regimes set their own standards, limit values and specifications that must be used for the test process for WLAN modules. A look at the three of the largest markets gives an idea of how many different requirements have to be met:
In addition to the regulatory tests and the certification based on them, there is also the option to certify the product according to the specifications of the Wi-Fi Alliance®. when using WLAN modules. The Wi-Fi Alliance® is a global network of companies that deals with the quality and advancement of Wi-Fi® technology and, in this context, also publishes certification specifications according to which manufacturers can certify their devices.
During this certification, which is not of a regulatory nature but which is considered a seal of quality around the world, the devices undergo various tests. Not only is WLAN functionality tested, but also if industry-recognized standards (IEEE 802.11) are met, to ensure interoperability, security and a range of application-specific protocols.
