CE Marking

What is CE Marking?

When a product is provided with a CE Mark the product can legally be sold within the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Area (EFTA). The European Union introduced the CE Marking scheme to make trade easier and cheaper between EU countries. By affixing the CE Mark the manufacturer claims that a product conforms to the minimum legal requirements.

How to obtain the CE Marking?

• Before the CE Mark can be affixed to a product, the manufacturer or exporter must prepare the following:
  • a Technical Construction File (TCF)
  • a Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
  • if applicable a product specific CE Marking certificate from a Notified Body
• When applying for a CE Mark you need to establish first which EU Directives are relevant to your product.
• Where a Directive requires independent testing or certification, this must be done by a 'Notified Body.'
  • A Notified Body is an independent organization that has been nominated by the European Commission to conduct the necessary conformity assessments.
