EMC requirements and Electrical Safety for LED lamps and their controller

The popularity of LED lamps has significantely gained in the past years. They are used  in numerous installation situations for various application purposes. CETECOM supports manufacturers and importers of LED systems with the testing and certification procedure of their systems world-wide.

EMC requirements for CE-labeling

As is the case for all electrical devices, the requirements of the EMC guideline 2004/108/EC must be observed for LED lamps as well. Since there is currently no specific EMC product standard for LED lamps, the following product family standards for general lighting mechanisms are usually consulted:

• EN 55015:2006 + A1:2007  Interferences of electrical lighting mechanisms and similar electrical appliances

• EN 61547:1995 + A1:2000 + A2:2009 Mechanism for general lighting purposes
• EN 61547:2009 EMC Immunity requirements

Furthermore the requirements of EN 61000-3-2:2006  (limits for harmonics) must be kept. It is to be noted that lighting mechanisms are classified as Class C products, which implies that the limits are stricter than in Class A or B. 

EMC requirements for LED lamps in cars

Just like for other electrical sub-assemblies a type permission (e/E indication) according to the KFZ guideline 72/245/EC and/or the UN regulation ECE-R10 is also required for LED lamps. For both procedures CETECOM has been accredited by the national authorities in Germany (KBA) and/or in Luxembourg (SNCH).

• EN 61347-1:2008: Lamp Control Gear – General Requirements
• EN 61347-2-13:2006: Requirements for operating devices of LED modules
• EN 62031:2008: LED modules for general lighting
• EN 62384:2010: DC or AC supplied electronic control gear for LED modules - Performance requirements

Since 2009 operational equipment for LED modules must be tested according to EN 61347-2-13: 2006.  For LED lights the safety requirements according to EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2 are also valid.
